An Excerpt from Chapter 3

The walk from the archive to Signor Enzo’s leather workshop took Sofia through the quieter backstreets of the Oltrarno, where the afternoon light fell in long amber slants across the cobblestones.

She pushed open the workshop door, and the scent of cured hide and neat’s-foot oil enveloped her like a held breath.

But it was Giulia she found there, sleeves rolled to her elbows, stirring a vat of deep indigo dye with a wooden paddle.

Sofia opened her notebook and showed her the angular lily she had copied from the antique map.

Giulia leaned closer. Then her expression shifted from curiosity to recognition.

“Wait. I know these lines.”

She pulled a heavy stitch-pattern ledger from a crowded cabinet and carefully opened it across the workbench.

There, formed by the precise path of the thread, was the same angular lily.

“It’s a binding stitch,” Giulia explained. “It’s not a symbol at all. It’s a signature.”

Sofia traced the pattern with her fingertip.

She had thought she was solving a puzzle.

Instead, she was listening to a conversation between craftsmen and generations.
