The archive smelled of paper, leather, and time.
Shelves climbed toward the ceiling, each one holding carefully labeled volumes whose stories had survived generations. Dust floated through the narrow beams of morning light as Sofia followed Elena deeper into the reading room.
"This city has a long memory," Elena said quietly. "Sometimes it chooses when it wishes to remember."
Sofia smiled politely, though deadlines still occupied most of her thoughts.
She had come for one map.
Instead, she found herself surrounded by centuries.
When Elena finally returned carrying a carefully wrapped portfolio, Sofia sensed that what rested inside was more than another historical document.
It was the beginning of a mystery.
